Cannes is a can't for American-owned nighclubs and restaurants

Au revoir, America!  Hospitality industry insiders are mumbling “sacre bleu!” now that the powers that be in Cannes are making it impossible for foreign businesses to operate on the seaside town’s beachfront when the celeb-studded film festival launches May 15.
This year, some clubs, restaurants and gifting suites that once operated on the French Riviera city’s waterfront are being pushed inland during the prestigious  festival to make room for Cannes businesses.
Miami-based nightlife chain Nikki Beach is one non-French business being booted from Cannes’ primo waterside and into hotels across the street. Though Nikki Beach will still hold roofop parties at the JW Marriott Cannes and in a second venue at the centrally located Palais des Festival, it has been denied the beachfront it had in the past. In the decade Nikki Beach has been at Cannes, A-listers Jude Law, Michael Douglas, Naomi Watts and Ryan Gosling have attended its bashes. Nikki Beach’s official position is that “This will be our 11th year, so we are doing something different this time!”
A Nikki Beach rep also says they were told street-level noise was an issue in being moved into the clouds.
But come festival time, sources say it’ll be business as usual for Le Baoli, a year-round Cannes boite that’s operated next door to Nikki Beach for several years. Le Baoli reps couldn’t be reached for comment.
Le Baron, a Parisian club that also runs a sister venue in New York’s Chinatown, will keep throwing an annual bash at Cannes’ 3.14 hotel, but insiders say the club has been refused permission for a beachfront pop-up.
According to Provocateur nightclub owner Mike Satsky, the U.S. clubs on the beach had been an exception to the rule, and doing business in the French town requires playing on the locals’ terms. That may explain why no one’s going to make too much noise about being displaced.
“You cannot operate in Cannes without local partners,” says Satsky, whose Provocateur club in the Meatpacking District throws a raging Cannes pop-up in club Gotha during the festival. “It ain’t happening.”
A rep for the festival referred us to city officials, saying only that “it is a topic that is related to the city of Cannes.” Reps for the city did not return our request for comment.

Longtime best friends Katie Couric and Lisa Gregorisch-Dempsey (mastermind behind “Extra”) have had a fight. “Katie had forgotten Lisa’s birthday, but admittedly she has a lot on her plate with her show,” a source tells Confidenti@l. The two have known each other since 1980s Miami TV. Couric once said she didn’t speak to her pal for two months after criticism for heavy eyeliner. Come on ladies, kiss and make up.

‘SLEEP’ TIME FOR WILDE & SUDEIKIS

PDA-obsessed couple Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis caught Off-Broadway’s “Sleep No More” at the McKittrick Hotel last week, for the second time.

MENDES AND GOSLING A FAR-OUT COUPLE

The Place Beyond the Pines’ premiere at the Landmark Sunshine Cinema on the lower East Side drew the movie’s stars, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes, who have been dating for over a year, but refused to acknowledge each other at the event.
“They once more refused to walk the carpet together,” an eyewitness tells Confidenti@l. “Despite photographers’ pleas, the two waited an ample amount of time [to get] far enough away from each other before they entered the carpet, to make sure they were not photographed together.”
The duo finally did pose together, but with Bradley Cooper by their side. Mendes looked stunning in a flowing peach Prada dress, while Gosling wore a velvet suit.
The crime drama stars Gosling as a motorcycle racer who resorts to robbing banks to support his family.
The Svedka-sponsored after-party at the Bowery Hotel drew the cast, along with Katie Holmes, Cooper, Victor Garber, Sam Rockwell, James Lipton and actress Jess Weixler.

DMX UNLEASHES HIS VOICE

DMX is singing instead of barking now. The “Where My Dogs At” rapper was spotted at Melba’s restaurant in Harlem Thursday night, where he gladly joined in to sing “Happy Birthday” to a patron.
“Of course, he put his own twist on the song,” a spy tells us. It’s not the first time DMX’s singing has garnered attention. He made a splash over the holidays with his rendition of “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” posted on YouTube. DMX was later spotted by patrons falling asleep at his table.
