Suzy Lee Weiss, a high school senior from Pittsburgh, wrote in a 'satirical' Wall Street Journal op-ed about how she should have "started a fake charity," among other things, to get into an Ivy League school.

Suzy Lee Weiss’ op-ed, ‘To (All) the Colleges That Rejected Me,’ has supporters cheering and critics jeering.

A high school senior's "satirical" op-ed to the Ivy League schools that rejected her is being praised by supporters and slammed by critics.
In "To (All) the Colleges That Rejected Me," which ran in the Wall Street Journal on Friday, Suzy Lee Weiss wishes she had "started a fake charity" or gone to Africa to "scoop up some suffering child, take a few pictures, and write my essays about how spending that afternoon with Kinto changed my life."
Weiss, who is a senior at Taylor Allderdice High School in Pittsburgh, laments that the odds were stacked against her when it came to admission into an Ivy League school, partly because she offered "about as much diversity as a saltine cracker."

The student, who has a 4.5 GPA, an SAT score of 2120 and experience as a U.S. Senate page under her belt, told the ‘Today’ show that she wrote the controversial op-ed after she was rejected from a bunch of top schools in one day.
Princeton, Yale, Vanderbilt and the University of Pennsylvania all turned Weiss down, and she was crying to her mother before her mom had had enough and suggested she talk to someone else. Weiss said she called her sister, a former assistant editor at the WSJ, who told her to write down what she was feeling.
"So I did, and this is what came out of it," Weiss said.

‘Had I known two years ago what I know now, I would have gladly worn a headdress to school,’ Weiss wrote in her WSJ op-ed. She went on to say that she offers ‘about as much diversity as a saltine cracker.’

‘Had I known two years ago what I know now, I would have gladly worn a headdress to school,’ Weiss wrote in her WSJ op-ed. She went on to say that she offers ‘about as much diversity as a saltine cracker.’

She wrote that all of the "just be yourself" rhetoric was "great advice, as long as yourself has nine extracurriculars, six leadership positions, three varsity sports, killer SAT scores and two moms."
Weiss also blames her parents, saying they left her "with a dearth of hobbies that make admissions committees salivate," like piano, violin, karate and swimming.
Her article has more than 1,000 comments, which range from people who think she is being a whiny, entitled brat to those who say she is a brave hero who speaks the truth.

"Loved the article. This clear-eyed, young woman sees through the nonsensical posturing that is so much of college prep these days. Refreshing to see a sober assessment, with wit," one reader wrote in a comment.
"I believe that you have an arrogant young woman who has given her sheltered impressions of a process that she not only does not understand, but reveals deep bias and a very bigoted attempt at humor was offensive to all," another reader wrote.
She may not be going to Harvard, but, according to ‘Today,' Weiss is still "ecstatic" about her acceptances to Penn State, Indiana, Michigan and Wisconsin.
